Leadership Starts Where You Are

I used to think leadership meant standing on a stage. That it began with a title — manager, director, pastor, founder. I thought leadership was about having people follow you, listen to you, or look up to you. But lately, I’ve learned that real leadership starts in the small, unseen spaces — in how we carry ourselves when no one’s watching, how we respond when life doesn’t go as planned, and how we treat the people right in front of us.

The truth is, God doesn’t wait until you have a platform to shape your influence. He begins where you are — in the home you’re managing, the job you might feel stuck in, the friendships you’re nurturing, the quiet faithfulness of just showing up every day.

Sometimes leadership looks like choosing patience when your kids are testing your limits. Or staying gentle with a coworker who’s hard to love. Or doing the right thing when it costs you convenience or credit.

Those choices don’t make headlines — but heaven notices them.Because God’s definition of leadership isn’t about control or charisma; it’s about character.

Luke 16:10 says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” That verse has been echoing in my heart lately. It’s a reminder that small obedience is never wasted. The way we lead ourselves — in thought, in tone, in integrity — shapes how we’ll one day lead others.

So maybe the place you’re in right now isn’t too small after all. Maybe it’s sacred training ground. Maybe God’s teaching you how to be steady, so that when the bigger things come, your soul won’t crumble under the weight of them.

Leadership starts with presence — not power. With faithfulness — not fame. Start where you are, lead where you are, and trust that God is already using it.
