Leading When No One's Watching

One of the hardest parts of growing in leadership — and faith — is realizing that most of the work happens behind the scenes.

The late nights. The prayers whispered in frustration. The small acts of faithfulness that no one sees, praises, or even acknowledges. It’s tempting to believe those moments don’t matter — that unless what we’re doing is visible or validated, it isn’t significant.

But Scripture paints a different picture. David was anointed as king long before he ever sat on the throne. His training ground? A field with sheep. Jesus spent 30 quiet years in Nazareth before His public ministry began. Even Moses spent decades in the wilderness before God called him to lead a nation.

The pattern is clear: before God calls us to lead publicly, He first leads us privately. He shapes our motives, tests our patience, and teaches us humility in the secret places.

Sometimes I get restless, wondering if my hidden season means I’ve missed something — if I should be doing more, reaching more, achieving more. But every time I bring that restlessness to God, I sense Him whisper, “You’re not being overlooked. You’re being prepared.”

Leading when no one’s watching is what builds trustworthiness. It’s what teaches you to obey for the sake of obedience, not applause. And it’s where your faith deepens, because you start living for the audience of One.

So if your leadership feels invisible right now, take heart. You’re not behind — you’re being refined. And God is still writing your story, even in silence.
