The Discernment Diaries: When you don't know what comes next

There’s a sacred tension in the space between what was and what will be. It's the hallway between two doors — one that’s closed behind you and one that hasn’t opened yet. You’ve prayed. You’ve waited. You’ve asked God for clarity, but all you hear is silence.

It’s in that silence that our faith is often most refined.

When the next step isn’t clear, we’re tempted to fill the space with noise — with striving, planning, and fixing. But discernment doesn’t always come through movement. Sometimes it comes through stillness.

Active waiting is not the same as passive waiting. It means showing up faithfully where you are — praying, serving, listening — even when your heart aches for what’s next. It’s saying, “God, I don’t know the plan, but I trust the Planner.”

Remember: God’s silence is not His absence.He often builds your character before He reveals your calling. He grows your roots deep before your branches spread wide.

So if you’re in a season of uncertainty, take heart. You don’t have to see the whole map to take the next step. Just keep walking with the One who does.
